Gather ‘round bulldog lovers. It’s time to celebrate the beauty of the magnificent bulldog breed because it’s National Bulldogs Are Beautiful Day! Flaunt your little pal and show others just how awesome they are!
134 years ago, on April 21, 1886, the bulldog breed was officially recognized by dog breeders. Since that day, dog breeders around the globe started creating the different bulldog breeds that we know and love today, like the French bulldog, English bulldog, and American bulldog.
Whether you’re a proud bulldog pawrent looking to justify the undying love you have for your fur baby or someone who’s simply curious as to why so many people are smitten by the breed, these are the 6 things that make bulldogs beautiful inside and out:
1. They have layers…literally.
When you hear the word “bulldog”, one of the first things that come to mind is what most would call their prized physical asset—their wrinkles. However, beauty does come with a price, and bulldog owners need to keep their fur baby’s folds free of food particles and moisture by regularly wiping thoroughly in between to prevent bacteria buildup and skin irritations.
2. Their underbite is simply adorable.
There are many things about a bulldog’s appearance that can make just about anybody die of cuteness overload: their stocky body, their bouncy walk, and of course, their insanely adorable underbite. They look like grumpy little snugglebums trying to act all tough but failing miserably! Even when you’ve had the worst day, coming home to a face like that would make you feel instantly better.
3. They make the best lazy day buddies.
Planning on staying at home all weekend? Bulldogs say, no problemo! Since they’re a low-energy breed, they’ll happily lay by your side while you binge-watch your favorite Netflix series and eat microwaved pizza. In fact, they may enjoy that more than running around the block.
4. They have short, manageable coats.
Yep, with bulldogs, hair shedding and grooming isn’t much of a problem. They shed a lot less than other dog breeds and have really fine hair that’s barely noticeable on floors, clothing or furniture; except, of course, on dark-colored surfaces or garments. They also don’t need regular hair trimming and frequent brushing since they have a short, smooth coat.
5. Their snoring is music to the ears.
Many of us get annoyed when we hear another person snoring, but let’s be honest; when a dog snores, it’s just about the cutest darn thing in the world! And guess what, as if they’re not irresistibly cute already, bulldogs are known for their tendency to snore—quite loudly, too, we might add—whenever they take a trip to dreamland. Video-worthy? You bet!
Take note, however, that flat-faced dogs, like bulldogs, are prone to respiratory problems because of having short airways. So while snoring is normal for the breed, don’t hesitate to contact your veterinarian right away if you notice something off about your bulldog’s snoring or breathing pattern.
6. They have such a gentle nature.
Last, but definitely not the least, bulldogs are known for having good temperament and a gentle, affectionate nature. Their loyalty and patience make them amazing family pets that do well with small children. What more can we say? Bulldogs are pretty incredible canines and really are beautiful inside and out.
Of course, all dogs—bulldog or not—are beautiful and deserve to be loved and celebrated every day! How are you planning to make your pooch feel extra loved today?
