In this episode of the Top Dog Podcast, Alexis Fine, Operations Manager at Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter, discusses her 15-year journey through nearly every role in the organization and the leadership philosophy that guides her work today. For Alexis, successful animal welfare starts with supporting the people who make lifesaving work possible every day.
One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is that caring for staff is essential to caring for animals. Alexis believes that when employees feel supported, valued, and empowered, they are better equipped to provide exceptional care.
“If your staff is happy and they’re doing well, the animals will be taken care of.”
She also emphasizes the importance of preventing burnout in a field where compassion fatigue is common. Through open communication, mentorship, and encouraging staff to prioritize their well-being, she works to create a healthy and sustainable workplace culture.
“I’d rather have you here at 100% than have you here stressed out, burnt out.”
Another key theme is the power of community involvement. Alexis shares how volunteers, fosters, adopters, and local partners have helped the shelter respond to emergencies, increase adoptions, and support pet owners facing difficult circumstances.
“You can’t do it by yourself in a shelter.”
Whether helping an elderly couple surrender dozens of cats or mobilizing foster families during severe flooding, Alexis views animal welfare as a collaborative effort that extends far beyond shelter walls.
“Saving animals is a community effort.”
At its core, this episode is about leadership, mentorship, and creating an environment where both people and animals can thrive. Alexis hopes her legacy will be one of empowering future leaders in animal welfare.
“I want to build leaders.”
This message is especially important for Dooberteers, fosters, volunteers, and shelter professionals. By supporting one another and working together, communities can create better outcomes for both animals and the people who care for them.
