Have you ever wondered how it would feel if you decided to give an animal a place to call home? We’re here to tell you that there is nothing quite like it! Whether it is happiness, love, or companionship that you feel, adopting an animal can be one of the most rewarding things you do. This year, International Homeless Animals Day is August 20, 2016. The holiday was created in hopes to educate people about pet abandonment, pet overpopulation, and the benefits of giving a furry friend a happy home.
With that being said, now it is time for you to get involved, too! Need some ideas on how to celebrate International Homeless Animals Day? You’re in luck! We have compiled a list for you below:
1. Give an animal a home! Adopt an animal from a local animal shelter that needs a warm, welcoming place to live.
2. Advocate pet adoption through social media (hint: use hashtags!) Post pictures of your furry adopted family member or your favorite adoption story!
3. Visit a candle-light vigil. Lots of organizations hold pet walks and candle-light vigils where people and their pets (usually dogs on leashes) memorialize victims of pet overpopulation.
4. Attend an adopt-a-thon. Many animal rescues host special adoption events with discounts or special savings. Be sure to check one out near you!
To sum things up, it is very important to recognize that there are many animals in need of a home due to overpopulation and unfortunate circumstances. In addition to overcrowding, there are also many stranded four-legged friends that need a new place to call home, making International Homeless Animals Day especially relevant. Let us know how you celebrate or if you have recently given an animal a home!
