In this episode of the Top Dog Podcast, Randa Richter of SPCA Florida shares her journey from corporate America to nonprofit animal welfare — and how purpose-driven work can create lasting impact for both animals and communities.
After starting as a volunteer, Randa made a life-changing decision to leave her corporate career and fully commit to helping animals.
“I felt the need to make a difference.”
Today, she leads multiple programs focused on prevention, outreach, and community support, helping thousands of animals each year while addressing the root causes of overpopulation.
One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is the importance of keeping pets in homes whenever possible. Through food assistance, low-cost veterinary care, and outreach programs, SPCA Florida supports families before they reach a crisis point.
“If it means food in their mouths… we’ll help keep them in the home.”
Randa also highlights innovative programs like “Mom’s Last Litter,” which tackles overpopulation by providing affordable spay and neuter while ensuring puppies and kittens are safely placed through foster care.
“Let’s give it a shot… if it works, fantastic.”
This mindset of experimentation and adaptability is key to solving complex animal welfare challenges — especially in rural communities with limited resources.
At the heart of it all is compassion — not just for animals, but for people as well.
“Never give up.”
This message is especially important for Dooberteers, fosters, and volunteers. Every foster home, every act of support, and every community program helps create more opportunities for animals to thrive.
