In this episode of the Top Dog Podcast, Chris Bush shares how decades of rescuing cats evolved into a larger mission focused on community cat management, education, and sustainable animal welfare solutions in Chatham County, North Carolina.
As a volunteer with Chatham Animal Rescue and Education (CARE), Chris is helping lead efforts to address cat overpopulation through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), affordable spay and neuter access, and community collaboration.
“We cannot rescue our way out of this problem.”
One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is the importance of prevention and community-based solutions. Chris explains that without affordable access to spay and neuter services, shelters and rescues will always struggle to keep up.
“If somebody doesn’t take the first step… it’ll never happen.”
Chris also highlights the shift happening in animal welfare — moving away from outdated assumptions about “feral” cats and toward a better understanding of community cats and humane population management.
“Not all cats need to be rescued.”
Through his work with CARE, Chris is focused on building long-term systems that support both animals and the people caring for them — especially in rapidly growing communities facing housing and affordability challenges.
“People will share what they’ve done.”
This episode also explores the emotional realities of rescue work, including compassion fatigue, ethical dilemmas, and the importance of teamwork and support systems within animal welfare organizations.
“You have to put your oxygen mask on first.”
At its core, this episode is about leadership, collaboration, and taking the first step toward creating meaningful community change.
This message is especially important for Dooberteers, fosters, and volunteers. Every effort — from fostering to TNR to education — helps create stronger, more sustainable outcomes for animals and communities alike.
