In this episode of the Top Dog Podcast, Daniel Roselle, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Ventura County, shares his journey from an unexpected first job at a humane society to leading an organization that has served Ventura County for more than 90 years. His experience spans animal care, shelter operations, fundraising, and leadership, giving him a unique perspective on how animal welfare organizations can continue to evolve.
Daniel’s career in animal welfare started somewhat by accident. After moving to California and looking for work, he ended up accepting a position at a local humane society. What began as a job quickly became a calling.
“I started my career in animal welfare by accident.”
Over the years, Daniel worked his way through nearly every aspect of sheltering, eventually becoming Executive Director of the Humane Society of Ventura County. That experience taught him that the role of a shelter has to extend far beyond simply caring for animals after they arrive.
One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is the importance of meeting people and animals before they reach a crisis point. The Humane Society has expanded its services to include veterinary care, community support, education, and other programs designed to make it easier for families to keep their pets.
“We need to be there before they come into the shelter.”
Daniel believes veterinary access is one of the biggest challenges facing pet owners today. When families cannot afford basic medical care, relatively small problems can quickly become emergencies that put both the animal and the family at risk.
“Access to veterinary care is probably one of the biggest challenges that we’re facing.”
The Humane Society’s veterinary efforts are designed to address that gap while also generating sustainable revenue that can support the organization’s broader mission. Daniel sees this as an important shift for nonprofits: finding ways to create earned income without losing sight of the mission.
“How do we create a sustainable revenue source that can help support our mission?”
Daniel also emphasizes the importance of innovation without abandoning the organization’s core values. With more than nine decades of history, the Humane Society of Ventura County has a strong legacy, but Daniel believes that honoring that history doesn’t mean refusing to change.
“You have to be willing to evolve.”
That evolution includes rethinking the traditional shelter model, improving the experience for adopters and visitors, and finding new ways to engage people who may never have considered supporting an animal welfare organization.
Daniel also reflects on leadership and the importance of building a team that can challenge ideas rather than simply agreeing with leadership.
“I don’t want a bunch of yes people.”
For Daniel, strong leadership means surrounding yourself with people who bring different perspectives, asking difficult questions, and being willing to admit when an idea isn’t working.
“It’s okay to fail.”
The conversation also explores the emotional reality of animal welfare leadership. The work can be rewarding, but it can also be exhausting. Daniel believes leaders need to recognize when they are struggling, ask for help, and create a culture where their teams feel supported.
“You can’t pour from an empty cup.”
At its core, this episode is about evolution, sustainability, and expanding the role of animal welfare organizations. Shelters aren’t simply places where animals wait for their next home. They can become places where families find resources, communities find support, and organizations develop new solutions to longstanding problems.
“We’re trying to build something that’s going to be here for another 90 years.”
