IIn this episode of the Top Dog Podcast, Dara Worthington, CEO of Friends of Strays Animal Shelter, discusses her unconventional path into animal welfare and how she helped transform a small shelter into a thriving community resource that now saves thousands of lives each year.
Although she didn’t come from a traditional animal welfare background, Dara brought leadership experience, vision, and a passion for helping animals. Under her leadership, Friends of Strays has expanded its facilities, increased adoptions dramatically, and developed innovative programs focused on keeping pets with their families whenever possible.
“We want to support our community as much as we can.”
One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is the importance of seeing the whole picture. Whether evaluating an animal, supporting a staff member, or helping a pet owner in need, Dara believes that meaningful solutions come from looking beyond labels and first impressions.
“Look at the individual.”
She also emphasizes the importance of creating shelter environments that reduce stress and improve quality of life for animals while they wait for their forever homes. From thoughtfully designed cat rooms to future plans for a more community-centered dog adoption center, every decision is made with the animals’ well-being in mind.
“We believe that love saves lives.”
As a leader, Dara focuses on building strong teams, mentoring staff, and helping people grow professionally — even if that growth eventually takes them elsewhere.
“Find a mentor.”
One of the most powerful moments of the conversation comes when Dara reflects on her recent diagnosis of stage four breast cancer and how it has strengthened her commitment to building a lasting legacy for both Friends of Strays and the animals it serves.
“I have to work on my legacy.”
At its core, this episode is about leadership, resilience, and creating something that will continue making a difference long into the future.
This message is especially important for Dooberteers, fosters, volunteers, and shelter professionals. Every act of compassion, every adoption, and every opportunity to support a family helps build stronger communities for both people and pets.
