In this episode of the Top Dog Podcast, Nicole Navarro, Executive Director of Pawsitive Beginnings, shares the remarkable story of how a passion for animal rescue grew into a sanctuary for foxes rescued from the fur trade and exotic pet industry. What began with four foxes has evolved into a mission that not only saves animals but also helps people heal.
Nicole’s journey started after volunteering with two rescued foxes and spending years learning about their care, behavior, and needs before launching her own sanctuary. Her thoughtful approach helped create a safe haven for foxes that had been discarded by the fur industry because they were considered unprofitable.
“The fur farmer deemed them useless, but those deformities saved their life.”
One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is the power of healing through connection. What started as a sanctuary for rescued foxes unexpectedly became a therapeutic resource for women in recovery and children overcoming trauma.
“The therapists now use the foxes’ stories of survival as a therapeutic tool.”
Nicole explains that the foxes participate entirely on their own terms, creating powerful lessons about trust, respect, and healthy boundaries for the people who visit.
“Everything is on the foxes’ terms.”
Over the years, Pawsitive Beginnings has welcomed hundreds of visitors seeking healing, connection, and inspiration. The stories of the foxes often mirror the resilience of the people who come to meet them.
“You live life forward, but you understand it backwards.”
At its core, this episode is about purpose, compassion, and being open to unexpected opportunities. Nicole never planned to create a therapeutic sanctuary, but by following her instincts and remaining open-minded, she discovered a mission larger than she ever imagined.
“I feel like when I founded this, everything started to make sense.”
