Kristen Davidson, Executive Director of BrightSide Animal Center in Redmond, Oregon, joins the Top Dog Podcast to talk about her unconventional path into animal welfare, the changes helping her shelter increase adoptions, and the leadership lessons she’s learned along the way.
BrightSide Animal Center typically adopts out around 1,500 animals each year, but recent programmatic changes have helped the organization increase both intakes and adoptions. For Kristen, that growth reflects the importance of being willing to try new approaches and continually look at how a shelter can better serve animals and people. Kristen Davidson – Subbed
Kristen’s career didn’t begin in animal welfare. She was studying law and initially imagined she might eventually work as a nonprofit attorney. An internship with a dog rescue in Nashville changed her direction, eventually leading her to the PEDIGREE Foundation and then into shelter leadership. Kristen Davidson – Subbed
“And I got pretty hooked.”
Her experience has given her a perspective that combines curiosity with a willingness to challenge established practices. Kristen believes shelters shouldn’t be afraid to ask why something is done a certain way and whether an internal policy still makes sense.
“There are rules. There are policies we can change.”
She also sees a broader shift happening throughout animal welfare. Kristen has noticed more people moving away from blaming pet owners and toward recognizing that many families are doing everything they can before ultimately needing to surrender an animal.
“Most people are trying to do the best for their pets and the best for animals.”
That mindset has influenced how Kristen approaches interactions with people who need help. Instead of assuming the worst, she believes animal welfare professionals should consider what someone may be going through and provide resources and options that could turn a difficult situation into a positive one. “Often we can change a negative situation into one that’s positive.”
For Kristen, strong leadership also depends heavily on the people around you. She describes her team at BrightSide as one of the biggest reasons she can handle the pressure that comes with leading an animal welfare organization. Kristen Davidson – Subbed
Ultimately, Kristen’s idea of leadership extends beyond what she can accomplish herself. She wants to invest in people who will continue doing meaningful work for animals long after her own role has changed.
“I would just love to be seen as one of the people who invested in that next generation.” Kristen Davidson – Subbed
Her story is a reminder that there isn’t always a straight path into animal welfare. Sometimes, the experiences that seem like detours can become the foundation for a career built around helping animals, supporting people, and creating better ways of doing the work.
